Sound laboratories as artistic practice



The talk introduces to the artistic field of sound art and how it relates to sound studies. Within sound art we find many artists working as or imitating the practices of researchers. In this type of work, the artistic idea is driven by a (research) question and the artistic process is designed as an experiment, but the outcome is ideally an aesthetic experience even though other perspectives on sound may also be revealed. The talk will refer to the recent published Bloomsbury Handbook of Sound Art co-edited by the speaker and Holger Schulze.


Sanne Krogh Groth is associate professor of Musicology at Lund University. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Copenhagen (2010) with a dissertation on the establishment of the Swedish electronic studio EMS (later published at Kehrer 2014). Her research concerns historiographic, aesthetic, political and post-colonial issues within the fields of contemporary music, electronic music, sound and performance art in the 20th and 21st century.
