The Soundscape of Genocide in Gaza: Sonic warfare, Sound memory and Music as Resistance
Lunch Lecture with Ellie Armon Azoulay
This talk examines sound as a tool of domination, intimidation, and violence, focusing on the ongoing assault on Gaza as a case study in the “soundscape of genocide.” Drawing on sound studies, ethnomusicology, genocide studies, and Holocaust scholarship, it argues that sonic violence is central to genocidal processes rather than merely a by-product of them. The paper foregrounds Palestinian “earwitness” accounts from social media testimonies, journalistic reports, and published narratives, prioritising the sonic experiences and sound memories of those enduring violence. By amplifying these testimonies, it seeks to rethink how genocide is heard, remembered, and theorised in the context of Palestine.
